Why did we do this?

To keep the library service at the heart of the Denby Dale community.

Kirklees Council had to make spending cuts of nearly £100m between now and 2016. The harsh reality was that fewer services would be offered.

These funding cuts will include a reduction in the scale of Kirklees’ library service.  All 26 libraries across Kirklees were under review.

All that’s was certain for Denby Dale’s library is there was money in Kirklees’ Budget until 30 September 2015.  We had a commitment from Kirklees Library Department to continue to supply us with one paid member of staff until then, who will be supported by our volunteers.

Community meetings and surveys in Denby Dale have shown a very strong need  – and desire – to keep the library service in our village.

We therefore  explored an alternative way to secure the future of our library.
